Fly a MiG Over Russia with Incredible
Adventures
an American Company You Can Trust
Love at First Flight
The year was 1993. A young American entrepreneur was in Moscow,
recruiting computer programmers for his new software company when
a guy named Andrey offered him a flight in a MiG-29. It was a
case of "love at first flight". He signed a deal to market the
flights worldwide, returned home to Florida and founded MIGS etc.
Over the next 12 years, the company changed its name to Incredible
Adventures and arranged over 2000 flights at Zhukovsky Air Base,
a top-secret facility located about 30 km from Moscow. People
from all over the world traveled to Russia to break the sound
barrier in a MiG-29 or climb to the edge of space in a MiG-25.
They flew accompanied by incredible test pilots from Zhukovsky's
Gromov Flight Research Institute.
In 2005, it all came to an end. A government decision to restructure
flight operations meant the end of civilian fighter flights at
Zhukovsky. Fortunately, as one door closed, another one opened.
In this case, it was the gates of the legendary MiG factory 400
km away in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The Russian Government
granted Nizhny Novgorod Aircraft Building Plant Sokol permission
to offer civilians MiG flights and Incredible Adventures found
a new home for its MiGs over Russia program.
Sokol is An Incredible Place for a Flying Adventure
On October 21, 1929, the Labor and Defense Council of USSR passed
a resolution to construct aircraft building plant Number 21 in
Nizhny Novgorod, Russia's third largest city. Coincidentally,
Plant Number 21 was built in just 21 months and on February 1,
1932, operations began. The first plane produced was a biplane
known as the I-5 fighter and the facility began to specialize
in the production of fighter aircraft.
From 1932 to 2002 the Sokol Plant produced 43,557 aircraft. The
company produced its first MiG, a MiG-15, in 1949. (The jet was
designed by Artyom Mykoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. MiG is a combination
of their last names.) The MiG-17 followed in 1952 and the MiG-21,
the jet often called "a test pilot's first love" began production
in 1959.
For years, the most popular flight sold by Incredible Adventures
was a high-altitude flight to the edge of space in the Russian
MiG-25 Foxbat. Sokol produced this fighter from 1969 to 1985.
Sadly, the incredible jet has now been retired and is no longer
available for civilian flights.
